Unvented cylinder advice
Honest answers to the questions we hear most.
Plain English, no jargon, no scare stories, from G3-qualified engineers with over 30 years in hot water and plumbing.
Do I need a specialist for an unvented cylinder?
Yes. Unvented cylinders store hot water at mains pressure and are protected by safety devices. Repairs and servicing should be completed by a competent engineer holding the G3 unvented qualification. It's the recognised benchmark for working on these systems. Always ask to see it; we'll happily show ours.
Is a dripping tundish urgent?
It should be checked soon. A dripping tundish usually points to expansion problems, incoming pressure issues or a safety valve operating. It's rarely an emergency, but the drip is a symptom of an underlying fault that won't fix itself, and a running tundish wastes heated water every day.
Why do I have no hot water?
Common causes include a failed immersion heater, thermostat faults, a tripped safety cut-out, or programmer and wiring issues. The controls need testing in a logical order before parts are replaced. Guess-fitting parts is how the same fault comes back a month later.
How often should an unvented cylinder be serviced?
Annually for most systems. Many manufacturers require a documented annual service to keep the cylinder warranty valid, and yearly checks catch expansion and valve problems before they become discharge faults or no-hot-water calls. See our servicing page for what's included.
Can you repair Megaflo cylinders?
Yes, Megaflo (Heatrae Sadia) is the most common cylinder we work on, alongside Gledhill, OSO, Santon, Telford, Range Tribune, Ariston, Joule and similar unvented cylinders. WhatsApp a photo of the data label if you're not sure what you have.
What photos should I send on WhatsApp?
Four photos usually do it: the cylinder data label, the tundish and discharge pipe, the valve set and expansion vessel at the top of the cylinder, and any visible leak or staining, plus a wider shot of the cupboard so we can see access.
How quickly can you come out?
Tell us the symptom and your postcode and we'll give you an honest answer straight away. No-hot-water and leak callouts are prioritised, and because we only cover a 20-mile radius from Wetherby, travel times stay short.
Will you tell me if the cylinder needs replacing rather than repairing?
Yes, honestly and with reasons. We work repair-first, but if a cylinder genuinely isn't worth repairing we'll show you why, explain the options and give a straight price. No scare stories either way, and we'll talk you through what affects the cost.
My Megaflo isn't heating up, what's wrong?
A Megaflo (Heatrae Sadia) with no hot water is usually a failed immersion element, a thermostat that's tripped or failed, or the reset button on the high-limit cut-out having operated. The cut-out trips for a reason, so it's worth finding the cause rather than just resetting it. See our common faults guide for more.
Why is there a pipe dripping water outside my house?
A small pipe dripping outside, often low down on an outside wall, is frequently the safety discharge from an unvented cylinder. Inside you'll usually find the matching drip at the tundish. It points to an expansion, pressure or safety-valve fault, and it wastes heated water, so it's worth getting checked.
How much does a repair or a new cylinder cost?
It depends on the fault, the parts and the access, so we quote after seeing the job, and there's no call-out fee. Typical jobs range from an expansion vessel recharge to a new Megaflo supplied and fitted, and we'll give you a clear price before any work starts.
Do you replace and install new cylinders too?
Yes. We're repair-first, but when a cylinder genuinely isn't worth saving, or you're upgrading, we supply and fit new unvented cylinders including Megaflo, and convert older vented systems to unvented. It's all G3-certified, so the same engineer looks after you from diagnosis to a new system.

A quick WhatsApp message usually confirms whether you need a repair, a service or just reassurance.
